Anna Maria Island Fl (Day 2)

Wow - we slept in "normal" beds last night. Although they were twin beds they were comfy and soft and we did not have to wake each other up to go to the bathroom....imagine!

We spent the morning walking around the neighbourhood. It is really nice and quiet here.

Guard dog, Bella

...and her side-kick, Gypsy.

Nice digs.....

Their dock on the canal.....

Doug and I went for walk in the morning. We totally get why people like coming here. So peaceful and nice. Little small roads that are more like lanes between the houses.....

Looking back down the dock, towards the island.....

May you always have a shell in your pocket and sand in your shoes....

Then Uncle Al took us for a long boat ride out to the old Fort Dade fort on Egmont Island. It was an old fort to protect the Americas from Spanish invasion. It was a 20 minute boat ride. Very enjoyable. The bay is actually quite shallow in spots. Always that beautiful blue water....

Captain and co-pilot....

 and trusty first-mate.....

Cruising out through the canals.....

A sand bar island where people just draw their boats up to and spend the day....

Coming around to the fort.....

Old Fort Dade.....hard to believe it was started in 1898 and finished in 1900!

Notice Doug's shorts were wet? We had to get out of the
boat offshore and the waves got the better of us!!

Where the big cannon was.....

Real photo of the soldiers in this exact same spot,
protecting the coast with that HUGE cannon!!....

Really, what you are looking at is the shell of the fort. All poured out of concrete,
all by hand in the late 1890's. Walls are pretty much gone. Pretty amazing, huh? This whole island was a community with the soldiers, barracks, fire station, gymnasium, schools, houses, etc. Gotta love history!!

Our great tour guides.....

Small cemetery on the island for the soldiers. Ironically, most of them died of
yellow fever. There were only two who died of gunshot wounds.....

Old brick work and railroad out to a now, non-existent dock.....

All these are old brick roadways that were laid by hand.....
(...and these are two old guys waking on them.....ha ha ha!!)

Back to Uncle Al's boat.....in about 4 feet of water!!!
(Yup, just got wet, that's all....)

First mate, waiting for instructions on anchor lifting......
I have spent so little time on a boat in my life that I do
best by staying OUT of the way......

On the way back in, Uncle Al took us on a tour of a bunch of the canals
that run behind the houses. So nice and peaceful in there.....

Big mangroves that go right to the water's edge....

The house that Al & Mary rented a few years ago. Mom was
there to visit them then. (Mom, do you recognize it??)

Out for dinner on the dock....Doug, Ginny, Mary, Alan & Al.
Ginny is Mary's sister ("other" Al is her husband....)

Yup.....that's why we are doing this trip!

 Goodnight from Anna Maria Island......

So, that was a great day. So nice to connect with this part of our family. It has been way to long and too much time has passed that we will never get back. We will have to do better from now on.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring! Stay tuned!!

Peace....

  1. What a nice day! Time well spent. Here in Langley, BC it's pouring, but buds are forming on the perennials.

  2. How is it that "Auntie Mary & Uncle Alan" are your age?
I must say, from sunny (-13 C) downtown Appleton (lots of rosy cheeks, no buds), Anna Maria Island looks pretty inviting.

    1. Well Dale, you likely just made their day! Uncle Alan is my mom's younger brother and Auntie Mary is his lovely wife. They are actually both older than us but they look GREAT!!! They are a real inspiration for sure. We want to be like them when we grow up!!!
