VdJ (Day 5): Birthday Party!

The other night, when we were at the campfire, I never had the chance to tell you about looking at the stars here. It is so dark in this valley that it is very easy to see so many, many stars. Our host, Sal Contreras, is an amazing, self-taught astronomer and for many decades has enjoyed watching and learning about our solar system. We loved listening to him talk about all the constellations. Thanks, Sal!! (sorry, no pictures - my new camera is good, but not that good!)

Today was a low-key sort of day. Doug cleaned and worked a bit on the bikes. Seems we are out of some type of oil for them. We will find it in town later.

Today, we were invited to a birthday party. We never turn down these invitations. We are always glad when Sal & Barb are able to include any campers that want to go. This was a birthday party for  64 year old senora. She is the mother of Sal & Barb's neighbour. Lots of kids on the bouncy thing in the yard and the MOST amazing band. We love these Mexican gatherings!! Here are a few shots:

In comes the band....

They played for a really long time....see the toy in front of them??!!

This little guy was playing the snare drum. Man, was he instense and into it!!

This was super cute. This little baby's feet were just pumping up and down. Not sure if it was to the band music or if he wanted out! Whatever it was, it was pretty funny!!

We really enjoyed ourselves. Thanks again, to our hosts, Barb & Sal!

We did, however, come back to some sad news. Doug's co-worker, Will Smith, passed away today, after a tough fight with pancreatic cancer. Our thoughts and prayers go to his wife, Kathy, their children and all the family and friends. I am not sure why, but this poem is one I often think about at times like this.....

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
The rain fall soft upon your fields.
And, until we meet again, may God
hold you in the palm of His hand.

Rest in peace Will.....

Peace tonight to everyone out there....
